Using Outlook To Access Gmail

Did you know that you can access your Gmail account using Outlook? This means you can use Gmail to store and search your mail and Outlook to compose messages and store your contacts. Perfect idea, isn't it?

First, make sure you enabled POP access in Gmail account. You can check this in Gmail interface in Settings > Forwarding and POP.

Now run Microsoft Outlook and go to Tools > E-mail Accounts... (Account Settings... in Outlook 2007). Start creating a new e-mail account and click Next. Select POP3 server type. In the next widow enter your Gmail account details (You Name, E-Mail address, password). As the incoming server type pop.gmail.com and as the outgoing type smtp.gmail.com. Now you should configure some advanced settings. Click More Settings... and select Outgoing Server tab. Check the box "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and leave "Use same settings as my incoming mail server selected". Now proceed to the Advanced tab. Check "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" for both Incoming and Outgoing servers. And the last one - type 465 under Outgoing server and 995 under Incoming server.

If you're using Outlook 2007 all settings should be imported after you entered your Gmail account details.

And do not forget to backup your Outlook!
